How Much do Modern Design Students Believe in Feng Shui?

//How Much do Modern Design Students Believe in Feng Shui?

“Feng shui” is a household term around the country and around the world, but it’s doubtful that many people will have any idea what it actually entails or how often it is actually utilized in the western world. As students of design, we spend most of our lives thinking about the details of what makes a certain style have a certain effect, perhaps studying the fundamentals of style in everything from graphic design to interior design. But does “Feng shui” entail much more than arrangement of furniture and perhaps a select choice of canvas prints for living room themes?

Are these concepts completely hidden from todays modern design students? We took a quick informal poll of some students around campus and came up with these following responses…

“I’ve heard the term, sure, but if you asked me to start practicing Feng Shui I’d probably revert to picking design elements based on my personal preferences. I’m not sure if it’s any different from the concept of interior design”.

“Yes, I love Feng Shui and I think it can have a big impact. However I don’t know how to go about practicing it. Seems like a strange, mystical art more then a science”.

“I once had an expert come into my home (my mom hired him) and do some design work. He was apparently a feng shui expert. I was too young to understand what he did exactly, but the home looked very nice after he left!”

Seems like there is a lack of knowledge of the science/art of feng shui. That’s a same, perhaps we can bring some awareness to this very ancient practice!
